The 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica is regarded by many, including several science fiction writers, as the best encyclopedia ever made. Since even the recent misguided copyright extension does not go back that far - it has been scanned and placed online. Worth looking at for early history or basic reference even if there are many typos from the scanning process.
