Why the Worldwide Myth of Dragon's?

The New York Times has an interesting article with some facts.

"As late as 1420, a battle between Sir John Lambton and the milelong Lambton Wyrm (old English for snake) was reported as fact, and flocks were reported at London fires."

Tim Powers and other fantasy writers would ask why do we treat the tales as myths if they were widely believed at the time?
